Carved buttercream cake

May 31, 2019January 1, 2020 by Lanie Cheatham

One of my favorite artists is Forest Ceramic Co who makes colorful carved ceramics. This cake was inspired by this artist. I made a chocolate cake and frosted it with different colored buttercream layers (white, turquoise, and purple). I first frosted it with turquoise, then froze the layers for 30-60 minutes. Then I added the purple layer, froze it, and finally the white layer and froze it. My sister is a sculpture major in college, so I borrowed her ceramics tools for sculpting and asked her to come over and help me. It was exciting to improvise the process like a ceramic artist. We made this cake the day before I took the SAT Subject tests in Biology and Math II. I probably should have been studying instead of making this cake, but it all worked out in the end.
